8B English - week 37 and week 38

Making a movie or writing a biography w. 37-38

Making a movie

Dream up a visual story

Because (eftersom) most movies are essentially visual stories, the first step is coming up with an idea that you want to turn into a movie.

Think about the movies you like to watch, or the books you like to read, and consider what makes them so interesting. Is it the characters, the action, the visuals, or the theme?

Expand your idea into a story

The essentials for building a story from your idea have to do with character. Who is your protagonist (central character)? What does your protagonist want? What keeps them from getting it? How will the protagonist be changed?

It's been said that all stories have one of two basic premises: A stranger arrives and shakes up the normal way of things, or a hero departs and goes on a journey.

Make sure your story has a beginning, in which the scenario and the characters are introduced, a middle, in which the conflict builds, and an ending, in which the conflict is resolved (löst).

Write a screenplay

A screenplay breaks every moment of the story into an individual, filmable scene. A screenplay writes out all the dialogs, attributed to each character, along with some physical directions, exposition, and camera movement.

Storyboard your film

A storyboard is a comic-book-like version of the film that you'll create, but without the dialog bubbles.

This process makes a long film go more smoothly, and will help you anticipate (förutse) difficult scenes or sequences to film.

Time span

Week 37 – you write your screenplay and draw your storyboard. Send the screenplay to me on Friday or earlier if you can. I know that Katja would like a copy of your storyboard.

Week 38 – you shoot your scenes on Wednesday and Thursday and edit the film on Friday. Airdrop your film to me on Friday.

Language

  • No swearwords
  • I prefer dialogues to scenes where you are just acting and not talking.
  • Vary your language – synonyms, idiomatic phrases etc

Have fun!

Writing a Biography (a personal description)

Week 37-38

  1. Read the text about Nelson Mandela at least three times.

  2. Make a dot list (punktlista) of five things you thought were really interesting about him.

  3. Write your own biography about him using your own language. Please use words from the wordlist, but try to avoid copying whole sentences even though some of them are reall…Send it to me on showbie. (Time: two lessons)

  4. Now it is time for you to write your own biography or personal description. Please choose one of the famous people I have chosen because they also wanted to change the world.

  • Martin Luther King Jr
  • Barac Obama
  • Mahatma Gandhi
  • Marie Curie
  • Rose Parks
  • Aung Sand Suu Kyi
  • Benazir Bhutto
  • Emmeline Pankhurst

To write a biography you should:

  1. Select a person you are interested in.

  2. Find out the basic facts of the person's life. (NE.se, Wikipedia – You must control your source (källa) and at the end of your paper (uppsats) I want to know what sources you have used.)

  3. Think about what else you would like to know about the person, and what parts of the life you want to write most about. Some questions you might want to think about include:

  • What makes this person special or interesting?
  • What kind of effect did he or she have on the world? other people?
  • What are the adjectives you would most use to describe the person?
  • What examples from their life illustrate (visar) those qualities?
  • What events (händelser) shaped or changed this person's life?
  • Did he or she overcome obstacles (hinder)? Take risks? Get lucky?
  • Would the world be better or worse if this person hadn't lived? How and why?
